Here's an updated review since my year in grade 8 has ended.Summit Middle School does a poor job of showing support for LGBT+ Youth. Though the counselors and youth workers are great (and I very much appreciate them) the school itself is very quiet and ignorant towards the topic. They put up rainbow stickers saying that they're LGBT friendly yet never speak up when students voice their concerns when it comes to discrimination. Stickers aren't enough, stickers don't do anything. 3 stars for the great people I've met in Summit. 3 stars because the 3 years I've spent there have drained me mentally.Not only is Summit failing at showing support for LGBT students, it also sucks at spreading awareness about mental health. Again, youth workers and counselors are great though. I can't say how many times school has made me cry and suffer panic attacks because I've lost count. I also can't say how many times I've felt supported by the school when I was going through a hard time because it's never happened. And I know a lot of people who agree.Summit has it's fair amount of good teachers and people. There's always going to be toxic behaviours no matter where you go but lots of other schools definitely handle toxicity better.
It has been two years since I have gone to this school, and I wish I could say that I enjoyed it.I wish. That's important. This school had been going down for a long time now, and reading the recent reviews, it seems as though it has been going down even further. I'll be going off of my experience in this school, so you are free to agree or disagree with my opinions.First thing that really destroyed my enjoyment of the school was the education. I know that B.C has a pretty bad education system, but it's incredibly blatant that it is a problem at this school. I know that the school board doesn't get that much funding for education, but that doesn't excuse the poor quality of education. An example of this is having the teachers having to give us up to (approximately) 10 minutes of lecture, then 1 assignment, and then that's it. Then everybody becomes rowdy, anxious and bored due to not being able to do anything because there is nothing to do. It was incredibly frustrating not being able to do more and explore more about what we were learning about, and not treating us like kindergarteners. We aren't stupid. We want to learn, just give us something to really sink our teeth into. Teachers also have very little help in their classrooms as well. I'm not going to give specific names, but some teachers really can not control their classrooms all that well. Mind you, most of the teachers were relatively submissive when it came to some students yelling and screaming their head off sometimes, so I can understand why it can be hard for teachers to do their job properly. However, I have sometimes eavesdropped on conversations in the hall when teachers were complaining to each other about the noise in their respective classrooms, and they got absolutely no help in learning strategies to calm their students down or at the very least someone, like a second or third person, could just stay in the class to control people. It's ridiculous.Additionally, this school has almost virtually no extra curricular activities. I don't know what happened, but I remember back all the way in 2013 when I was in Grade 6, there was a plethora of activities everywhere. Sadly, all of them were only available to grade's 7's and 8's, so I was excited to do some of these clubs in the following year. Then literally the year after, a huge teacher strike happened, and virtually all funding went down the drain, and there were no clubs to join. I thought they would recover some stuff, but by and large, there was nothing of interest. The only thing that I wanted to do was skiing trips they gave in December, but that was horribly expensive , and I didn't want to pay, which can be said for the clubs as well; really expensive for so little. The only thing I remember joining was a swim club after school that the school offered was only two weeks with little to no training, and then we faced off against other schools that had months of training, and we got beat super hard. There was a basketball team as well, and much like the swimming, poor or little to no training was given , and the basketball team got beat, hard. These are just some of the examples I could come up with, but if you are looking for a school with a variety of clubs and sports to join, this is not the school for you. The community is also just hot garbage. Not going to go into detail, but it is bad. Not everybody is mean, but... it is really toxic.In conclusion, avoid this school at all costs. No funding, poor staffing, horrendous educational material that DOES NOT prepare you for high school and no clubs or sports that are actually properly funded, coached and leaded properly. Go somewhere else, but not here. It's not worth your time. - A past student that wants to save you the pain and suffering of going here.
This school is ok. Some good teachers, and some very strict teachers. The problem here is that some kids are way too arrogant, and every now and then I hear someone say Wanna fight?
